Academic Job Search Support for Future Faculty

The future faculty team in the Center for Teaching and Learning provides workshops and individual consultations to assist graduate students and postdoctoral scholars interested in careers in higher education. The Future Faculty Job Search Academy (FFJSA), our annual academic job search series, features face-to-face workshops complemented by asynchronous resources. This Academy takes place in four parts; Parts 1-3 cover the application packet and Part 4 covers the interview and job talk process.

CTL faculty offer one-on-one consultations to review participants' application packet or to discuss upcoming interview or presentation plans. Visit the consultations page to submit a request at least two weeks before you wish to meet.

Application Packet Development

Most academic job searches begin the fall semester as institutions post open faculty positions. Through the "Preparing your Application Packet" workshop series, participants will be able to strategically plan their academic job search and identify and employ key elements in preparing their application materials,  including CV, cover letter, and teaching and research statements.  If the position you are applying for requires a diversity statement, help can be provided by request. Participants will have access to asynchronous resources to use before and after the in-person workshops.  This workshop series is presented in July and September.

Interview and Job Talk Preparation

Candidates for faculty positions experience an interview process that is unique to academic positions. Participants in this workshop series will learn what to expect in first and second round academic interviews, how to make a positive impression on the interview committee, and how to structure and deliver a job talk that wows your audience. The materials in this workshop will be presented in November and repeated in January for those who cannot attend.
